What Does This Ultrasound Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Mar 2017
Question: Hello....this question pertains to the results of an ultrasound which my husband had on his thyroid, and I am attaching a copy of the report. He had seen his doctor for his annual physical and the doctor thought she felt a nodule in his thyroid and then felt it again and could not feel anything. To be safe, she ordered the ultrasound, which I see showed no nodules but moderate enlargement.

My husband is 50 years of age and in excellent health, shows no symptoms of under or over active thyroid. His mother did have an overactive thyroid which was removed and she continues to be on thyroid medication.

My husband will be going for blood work soon, among which will be thyroid function tests. In the meantime, can you shed some light on the attached report and what it means? If his blood work for thyroid function comes back normal, is there anything else which should be done?

Thank you!!

Brief Answer:
About thyroiditis;

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking!
I can understand your concern regarding to your husband's health.
The physician described as '' thyroiditis'' the enlargment and the changes he noticed at the thyroid structure.
Thyroiditis is a general term that refers to “inflammation of the thyroid gland”. It includes a group of disorders causing thyroidal inflammation but presenting in different ways. For example, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is the most common cause of hypothyroidism.
It is an autoimmune disease ( very common in population) caused by antibodies that attack the thyroid gland. As a result it's structure changes and it's function may get lowered.
It is a chronic pathology and is treated by taking levothyroxine ( the hormone that the thyroid gland should produce) longlife.
I am not mentioning all the causes of thyroiditis because there are some, but after the blood test resulted your physician will get an idea regarding to thyroid function. If it lowered, Hashimoto thyroiditis is the most common cause.
Other causes of thyroiditis (Graves' disease, viral infection causing subacute thyroiditis, medicaments such as amiodaron ect).
Hope the information will help.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
