Question: Hi,

I am 38 years old and my recent health check shows my cholestrol 254, triglyceride 247 and ldl 171 other including ecg was normal.

I started diet and 1 hour brisk walk , 10 to 15 mins exercise daily now. After a gap of 2+ years.

Is it required to take medicines to reduce cholestrol? If so can i stop medicine once cholestrol level comes to normal and control with only diet and physical exercise ?

After this check i am feeling bit uncomfort that may be because of anxiety.

Since 4 days sometimes i feel bit pain in left side of chest and visited physician he performed ecg and it came normal no bp also. He said this is because of gastrik or acidity and gave medicine and he advised me to take medicine for cholestrol also for 3 months and we can take off after that.

Can u please tell me is there a necessary to go for medicine, if yes is it ok if i stop medicine and continue diet and exercise after 3 months.

Note: I had never experienced chest pain earlier and no one in my family with heart related issues.

Thanks,

Brief Answer:
please provide more details.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir
Before I could analyze your cholesterol profile further, I need following information. What is your height and weight. What is your usual blood pressure reading. If you smoke. Do you have diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, angina or any other significant illness.
If the pain to your GP appaers to be non-cardiac and he has advised you medicine for stomach upset, you should continue that. you must see him if there is no relief or any uncomfortable symptom is there.
Waiting for your details.
Sincerely
Sukhvinder

Dear Sir,

My height is 180 CM and weight is 75 KG, my usual blood pressure will be normal always 120/80 to 130/90 and i am not diabetic but the recent health check reports shows my diabetic in border like 120 and 152.

I never had heart attack and stroke in past only from last few days feeling bit pain in stomach and some times in left chest that it.

I am ready to take medicine to reduce cholesterol but the same time i don't want to take the medicine life long, i want to control it by natural exercise and diet.

Please advice me, my GP was telling medicine is not required for life just take 3 months to stabilize the levels and later you can control by exercise and diet.

Please provide me details on it.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir
Your ACC risk score is 2.6% and Qrisk score is 2.3%. I normally do not prescribe cholesterol lowering medication to my patients with such a profile. The best way to control LDL cholesterol in such patients is to avoid oily and fried foods, walk regularly and also keep daily intake of calories in check. Do not eat refined carbohydrates and do not take more than 50-55% of your total calories as carbohydrates. After these life style modifications , you need to re-check lipid profile after 3 months.
Normally cholesterol reducing drugs are given for life long. Hence they are not started in a hurry or as a stop-gap arrangement.
Hope this clarifies the issue.
Feel free to discuss further.
Sincerely
Sukhvinder

Thanks sir for detailed explanation.

My GP actually suggested to take rozavel 1 mg for 3 months but i don't want to go for medication, i want to lower cholesterol levels by walk and food diet.
Only one tablet i took and stopped after that and continuing diet and walking since 2 weeks.
Today also i am feeling little pain at upper left side of the chest since noon, still taking the tablets given by doctor for stomach upset, any idea why this pain is coming ? the ECG did on Saturday was normal, do i need to worry about this pain ?
I socially take 1 to 2 pegs of drink does that affect my diet of lowering cholesterol ?

Thanks,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
No need of statins as yet. Visit ER for pain evaluation.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir
As I detailed you earlier that this kind of profile do not require any medication to lower cholesterol as yet.
As far as pain is concerned, it is not possible to primarily evaluate pain without examination. Only general information about the nature of pain can be given. Hence I request you to contact local emergency room (ER) for evaluation of pain.
An anginal pain may occur from lower jaw to umbilicus. I is felt typically as heaviness of chest. it increases on exertion or exercise. It is typically not elicitable by pressure or touch and do not increase on particular pressure.
With these comments, I request you again to visit your local ER to get the pain evaluated.
Sincerely
Sukhvinder
