What Does This Echocardiogram Report Indicate?

Posted on Tue, 13 Sep 2016
Question: Hi, my recent ECO shows mildly dilated left atrium (4.2) and trace tricuspid valve regurgitation. All other results are normal. Two years ago my LA was 4.0. I am being followed every two years for MVP syndrome. recent eco shows normal MPV function, no regurge. Is this something to worry about? Average PB is 132/80, although when I go to doctor;s visit it can spike up to 160/80, but goes back to normal in less than 2 hours. I am taking hydrochlorothiazide (12.5 ml).

Brief Answer:
does not sound alarming

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir
1. The LA size measurement by diameter is a crude method of looking at LA volume. Now the recommendations are that we should measure LA volume rather than LA diameter. Hence, best interpretation can be done if LA volume is known. Moreover, a change of 5% over a period of 2 years is not alarming. Having said that, I have following comments to offer.
2. LA size is dependent upon many factors like your body surface area, your body weight diastolic functions of heart and regurgitation through the mitral valve. Since your diastolic function is normal and there is no regurgitation, the change in body weight will be an important consideration.
Hope that provides some insight into the issue. Feel free to discuss further.
Sincerely
Sukhvinder

Hello Dr XXXXXXX
Thank you for your response. My body weight increased 15 pounds from the previous Echo and I am now 187 lbs (5 feet 9 inches tall). Can lowering blood pressure help to reduce LA size? I could provide my echo report if that would help further.

Brief Answer:
reupload your echo report

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir
1. I am sorry that your ECHO report is not uploaded on the page. Please retry.
2. Yes, an increase in weight and blood pressure can increase the LA size and reverse is also true.
sincerely

optimize weight and good control of blood pressure.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir
I have gone through your ECHO report and there is no suggestion of MVP in it. Overall, it is satisfactory. Nothing more than what you have already wrote about it is there and we have already discussed it.
Most important target will be optimization of weight and good control of blood pressure.
All the best.
Sincerely
Sukhvinder
