What Does This Biopsy Report From Colposcopy Indicate?

Posted on Mon, 26 May 2014
Question: Hi Dr., you answered my questions about my colposcopy and abnormal pap smear results. I recently received my biopsy report from the colposcopy. Could you tell me what the results are? Is there anything I should be concerned about with my results? I will be seeing my doctor tomorrow morning.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX and welcome back,

The biopsy report does not suggest any abnormality. The ectocervix is the outer part of the cervix that your colposcopic surgeon had said " it looked normal "as you had informed me last time. Even in this case it is normal so no worries about it.

The transformation zone is usually an area formed at the junction of the inner and outer cervix and its absence means that that area has also not undergone any change.
The endocervical cells show a squamous metaplasia. Means that normally the cells in the inner part of the cervix are of glandular type of lining. Now it has changed to another type that is squamous. This lining is more resistant to any infection and this happens as a response to infection. This change may reverse to normal or stay as it is. As long as it does not show "dysplasia" or abnormal cells there is no need to worry.

So as of now, as the first report was abnormal, I suggest that you get a pap after 3 - 6 months to just monitor the cells.

This report is fine as according to me there is no need to worry. There are no abnormal cells and this is a very good sign.

I hope that I have explained the report and as of now there are no worries.

Take care.
