What Does This MRI Report Regarding Hearing Loss Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 10 Jun 2014
Question: I had an MRI of the brain because I had some hearing loss in the left ear. The MRI did not show any growth on the nerves of the inner ear but showed " a small incident meningioma and a few nonspecific cerebral white matter signal alterations suggest chronic microvascular ischemia. My ENT said to take ginkgo biloba and antioxydents. Is this indicative of a more severe problem or possible dementia. My mother had dementia so I worry.

Brief Answer:
MRI features are not concerning...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Meningioma are benign tumours. A neurosurgeon can remove this tumour safely. But often we plan its removal when it's large and causing symptoms - headache, seizure. Don't worry these complications are rare. As far as your concern, meningioma doesn't strongly affect your chances of dementia.

Few microvascular ischemic changes are common in your age group. Good control of blood pressure and cholesterol will lower the chances of more ischemic changes. Discuss about starting antiplatelet drugs with your doctors (I have seen few neurologist use them in patients with similar MRI changes).

In a nutshell, I don't see any significant MRI changes on your report. These changes definitely will not lead to dementia in the near future. You might need to consult an ENT surgeon to understand about the hearing loss.

Hope this answers your query. Let me know if you need clarification.
