Question: CT scan results : Images at the lung bases demonstrate mild left basilar plate-like atelectasis or linear scarring. Mild nodular pleural thickening is also noted. No pleural effusion or pneumothorax. Dose this mean lung cancer?

Brief Answer:
Features seen are acceptable at your age

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
This is Dr.Vivek, Radiologist and I come across such findings commonly.

At your age the lower lobes of lungs (lung bases) show certain changes which can be due to normal aging and is also seen much earlier in the in over weight population. The same can be said about mild nodular pleural thickening with nodules usually measuring less than 4 mm in diameter.

These findings are in no way related to cancer. The plate like atelectasis is seen more in the bases and posteriorly and XXXXXXX to trapped air in the lungs. This appears more prominent in the elderly and overweight patients.

Please do not worry about your lungs being affected in any way.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have nay doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
