Question: MY AGE IS 67. I AM HAVING HYPERTENSION FOR LAST 25 YEARS AND CONTROL THE BP BY MEDICATION. WITH MEDICINE IT REMAINS IN THE RANGE OF 80 & 140. LATELY I AM ALSO HAVING HIGH BLOOD SUGAR. FASTING IS 125 AND PP IS 201. I WANT TO KNOW WHETHER I SHOULD TRY TO CONTROL THE SUGAR BY DIET CONTROL OR MUST START TAKING MEDICINE FOR THAT TOO. I GO FOR MORNING WALK 5 DAYS A WEEK FOR 30 MINUTE. PLEASE ADVISE.
lipid profile report of yesterday shows tri-glyceride and LDL a little higher than upper limit for which i have resumed taking Rosuvas 10 mg. Unfortunately the report is not readily available for uploading.

Brief Answer:
Lifestyle changes initially for diabetes.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.

Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

1. Blood pressure in the range of 140/90 or anything less is excellent for your age.

2. Your fasting and post prandial blood sugar is high. Diet control is advisable in the initial stage. If you can get the sugar to level to within normal range, by diet, weight reduction and moderate exercises within a month, its good. Life style changes is always good, however, do keep checking your blood sugar at intervals to make sure its within limits. Take multiple small meals with fiber rich diet.
I am advising this based on the assumption that your sugar levels are abnormal in past 2-3 months.

If your lately is six month or a year, then medication is advisable, preferably metformin. It helps in weight reduction also. For medication, you will need to take prescription from your doctor.

3. Mildly increased triglycerides and LDL is not much to worry. With life style changes being done for diabetes and rosuvas, it will come within normal range. Make sure your diet contains more of fiber preferably from fruits and vegetables.

Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
