What Does The Following Blood Test Result Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Mar 2017
Question: Hi Doctor,

I done blood test recently and got the result which shown -
1. Treponema Pallidum Antibody - Reactive
2. VDLR - Non-Reactive
3. TPHA - Positive
in remarks, possible syphilis either early or latent or previously treated syphilis.

The question is I don't have any symptoms or any treatment for syphilis before this and this is the first blood testing on this.

What should I do with this result should I get treatment on this ? As the consultant that explain to me that I'm a carrier of syphilis.

Brief Answer:
I would suggest you to take FTA ABS test for syphilis

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I am dr.kakkar (dermatologist and venereologist). I have noted your concern.

There is a small chance of false positive positive TPHA.
You may take a different test for syphilis i.e FTA ABS for syphilis. If this is also positive then it would be advisable to take treatment for syphilis. However if FTA ABS is negative then TPHA was most likely a false positive result.

Regards
