What Does The Following TORCH Result Indicate?

Posted on Mon, 24 Aug 2015
Question: Hello

We adopted a baby girl child who is 6 months old. We got her TORCH test done where her IGG results came positive and IGM results were negative.

Can you please suggest what does this mean and is it a cause of concern for her future.

Do we take any precautions / medicines ?

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Nothing to worry about

Detailed Answer:
Hi...You need not worry about the result which you have uploaded.

It means that the kid doesn't have any active infection and that is what the negative IgM means.

Positive IgG means that - the baby's biological mother had those infections and she has given the resistance power she had developed against those diseases to the baby too. So the baby is protected till the IgG antibodies last in the baby against those diseases.

Thanks doctor. Much appreciate your response.

Couple of follow-up questions

1) Out of different parameters of TORCH, her 'Toxoplasma' IgG is negative. I am understanding that it means that her bio mother did not have that infection. Her mother only had infections related to Cytomegalo, Rubella and Herpes which the baby is not carrying since her IgG is positive (resistance against infection) and her IgM is positive.

Is this understanding correct ?

2) Can it cause any problem in her development. She is 6.5 months old and only 4.5 Kgs. Could this be due to any infection her mother was carrying. I am also guessing that it could be because she was in a Govt Adoption center & did not get the one to one care.

Brief Answer:
Your kid doesn't have any active infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi...Your kid doesn't have any active infection. She is protected form CMV, Rubella, HSV 1 and 2.

She doesn't have protection from Toxoplasmosis as her mother did not have it.

The baby doesn't have Syphilis or HIV or Hepatitis B.

Her low weight is not because of these infections. It could be because of her poor feeding. Weight also depends on her birth weight. If it was low then the current weight will only be proportionate to that till good feeding practices are adopted.

I wish your kid a bright future. If you need any future medical consultation and suggestions, I will be glad to help.
