What Does The Blood Result Of Hemoglobin E Trait Suggest?
Question: Hello Doctor,
We have found a match for my sister, and got their bold tested. Everything looks normal other than the Thalasemia report which is attached in the attachment. It's fine for my sister but the guy seems to have Hemoglobin E-trait. This is what I could gather from the internet:
" If one parent has Hemoglobin E trait and the other parent has normal hemoglobin, there is a 50 percent (1 in 2) chance with each pregnancy of having a child with Hemoglobin E trait.
If one parent has Hemoglobin E trait and the other parent has beta thalassemia trait, there is a 25 percent (1 in 4) chance with each pregnancy of having a child with Hemoglobin E/beta thalassemia disease. Hemoglobin E/Beta Thalassemia disease is a lifelong disease that can cause serious health problems.
If both parents have Hemoglobin E trait, there is a 25 percent (1 in 4) chance with each pregnancy of having a child with Hemoglobin E disease. People with Hemoglobin E may have health problems and mild anemia."
From this it seems to me that they are quite fine. Still I want to know from an expert. Can you please let me know if there is any concern (in near or far future) for them, any thing they should be careful of...

Based on clinical reports and query, my opinion is as follows:
1. HbE is the worlds most common mutation and is also important as people with HbE are very much resistant to falciparum malaria.
2. If it is only HbE trait, it has no clinical significance. Nothing to worry.
3. There is nothing to worry at present or in future. However, if still wanted, they can check the levels of Hb F (fetal hemoglobin) and also watch out for splenomegaly.
4. If the guy has any history of blood transfusion anytime, discuss the possible cause. However, get a very good screening for blood transfused diseases.
If no transfusion, nothing to worry.
