What Does The CT Scan Report Indicate?
Question: Hi Doctor- on the advise of my ENT, i got a CT scan of PNS and seek the advise about the problem and guidence on the treatment. The report is as udner
Focal polypoid mucosal thickening seen along infero-medial wall of left
maxillary sinus. There is mild mucosal thickening involving bilateral frontal sinuses,
bilateral anterior ethmoid air cells and ethmoid bullae. No intrasinus air-fluid levels
seen.
Minimal mucosal thickening seen along right hemicompartment of sphenoid
sinus with partial obliteration of sphenoid recess.
Bilateral maxillary infundibulae & uncinate processes are normal. Patent right
accessory maxillary osteum seen.
The fronto nasal recesses are blocked. The osteomeatal complexes are clear.
The nasal septum is deviated towards left, impinging onto left inferior nasal
turbinate. Right inferior nasal turbinate is hypertrophied. Bilateral middle turbinates
show paradoxical curve with pneumatization of their vertical lamella.
Crista galli is well developed. Bilateral cribriform plates & fovea ethmoidales
are intact. Kero`s type II ethmoid roof seen.
Basal lamella & lamina papyracea are intact.

The finding on your CT scan PNS is explained below.
1. There is a polyp in left maxillary sinus. This is not a major concern.
2. Mild sinusitis is noted in the frontal and ethmoid sinuses. This is a mild inflammation and can cause slight headaches in between the eyes but nothing needs to be done.
3. Minimal sinusitis is also noted in the sphenoid sinus. This is also a minor minding.
4. The openings of the maxillary sinus called infundibulum is normal.
5. The fronto nasal recesses are blocked and this is a small finding showing block of passage draining the frontal sinus.
6. The osteomeatal complexes are clear is normal.
7. The nasal septum is deviated towards left, impinging onto left inferior nasalturbinate. Right inferior nasal turbinate is hypertrophied. Bilateral middle turbinates show paradoxical curve with pneumatization of their vertical lamella. This means that the central wall separating the nostrils is slightly bent to one side. It can cause difficulty in breathing and only if there is a significant curve of the septum then it needs surgical correction.
8. Crista galli is well developed. Bilateral cribriform plates & fovea ethmoidales are intact. Keros type II ethmoid roof seen. This is normal.
9. Basal lamella & lamina papyracea are intact. This is normal.
In conclusion there are two significant findings.
(i) The nasal septum is more bent to left side and this might need surgical correction only if your symptoms are related to it.
(ii) There is mild sinusitis and this can cause mild headache and pain between the eyes. It does not look like a major concern.
