What Does Right Bundle Branch Block In An EKG Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 28 Dec 2015
Question: I am a 54 y/o female with history of HTN. EKG other day showed possible left atrial enlargement, marked left axis deviation, and incomplete right bundle branch block. Wondering what this means and does it indicate that I could have had an MI?

Brief Answer:
Echocardiogram

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for your question and welcome to HCM. I understand your concern.

All of these parameters described from the EKG are parameters that warrant further investigation. Although they are slight changes in the heart electrical axis and may suggest, not specifically, for possible problems. From this EKG description, I would exclude, with high probability, a past myocardial infarction. However, since the atrial enlargement is seen, I would suggest to follow with an echo cardiogram. With this exam, we could carefully assess the size of the heart chambers (atria and ventricles), movements of the heart muscle (a lack of movement of a certain heart "wall" would be indicative of a past myocardial infarction, therefore this would confirm or exclude the MI), and the structure and the function of the heart valves. Based on the echo cardiogram results, further treatment or testind procedures can be undertaken, if necessary.

I hope I was helpful. I am happy to help, if you have follow-up questions. Please rate the answer, if you do not. Wish you a good health.

Best regards,
Dr. Meriton
