What Does Pain With Swelling On Knee Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 1 Dec 2014
Question: I had a slight pain with swelling in my left knee area since I did a long bus journey of 20 hours in seated position when I came back to XXXXXXX on 12/10/2014. Since,I am physically active and play cricket, I resumed my activity the next week to play for my team during which I was not running that freely as earlier and had pain daily after practice and felt slight crunching in my knee every time I bent. I met with a road accident on 25/10/2014 and got impact and bruises on the same knee.

My company doctor ordered an X-ray followed by an MRI a few days later as X-ray was not conclusive (04/11/2014 MRI report/findings attached).

On 05/11/2014 I was advised to keep from knee mobility for 3 weeks or so and at the same time from bending and squatting for 6 weeks.

A copy of MRI report and doctors findings attached according to which simple bone cyst accompanied with Grade 3 posterior horn medial meniscus,Grade 2 anterior horn medial meniscus, mild-interstitial tear/sprain in anterior-cruciate ligament and effusion in patella area were observed.

I want to seek an alternate advise.

Do I need to undergo a major knee surgery or arthroscopic repair/re-construction.

What would be the expected cost of Arthroscopic treatment, if needed?
If needed, how long will it take for my full recovery (I mean resumption of my strenuous sports activities) post surgery?

I am based at XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Arthroscopic repair is better.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The Grade III medial meniscus tear is the cause of your pain and instability of the knee. It is associated with inflammatory changes in other ligaments.
Usually a Grade III tear heals in 4-6 weeks if treated conservatively. In case the pain is persistent and immobilization of the knee is not complete then a surgical repair should be considered. Surgical repair allows early healing ( in 1-2 weeks)and lesser chances of osteoarthritis in older age.
An arthroscopic knee surgery is better as compared to the open repair.
In both the cases after the healing physical therapy is recommended to regain the full range of movement.
The cost of treatment varies from doctor to doctor. It can cost you upto 1Lac INR at XXXXXXX in centers like Apollo.

I hope this answers your query.
