Brief Answer:
No this can not be the cause for pain in her side.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on HCM.
No, hiatus hernia can not cause pain in any side of the body.
It can cause epigastric or central chest pain.
Hiatus hernia is displacement of gastroesophageal Junction in the Thoracic cavity.
And it is the common cause for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
GERD causes belching, burning epigastric pain, central chest uneasiness, bloating etc.
Pain in side region can be due to muscular cause.
Best treatment for hiatus hernia is surgical correction.
But treatment modality depends on severity of the condition.
So please let me know
1. Did she have burning epigastric pain?
2. Did she have bloating and belching?
3. Did she have chest tightness?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wishing good health to your wife.
Thanks.
