Question: My husband has a colonoscopy on Sept 22. Doctor removed 80% of a 2 cm polyp. After being on a liquid diet for 7 days, he went back to eating solid foods. He now urinates more frequently (every 2 hours) and his bowels is at the point of moving but doesn't come out. What is causing this?

overlapping genito urinary tract infection with constipation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query.
Have seen your details and i appreciate your concerns.
As per your query answers are-

Our body is one of the most complex machinery of this universe where almost all systems are related to each other.
I would give you a small and common example.Every one knows how to write and read but try this once-
Don't write or hold a pen for 10-14 days and when after 14 days you would hold it again you will find that for first few hours you can't maintain the same pace as you had earlier(a sort of new sensation).

In the same way after polyp removal your husband was on a soft liquid diet for almost a week after and altleast a day before surgery. What happens is that our body being a smart system slowly and slowly gets adapted to these changes in your diet. This problem is often encountered by a number of patients after abdominal surgeries so don't panic its quiet normal.
Secondly despite of being nauseous and dizzy he ate a lots of heavy fried and oily food which itself is a major cause of constipation.
In lay mans language initially you trains your body to be stable pn liquid diet and once your body adopted to that you loaded it with heavy oily snd processed food. This will definitely cause problem.
Ideal way is that right now as he is having symptoms give him a fleet enema or laxative for few days.Laxatives are nothing but stimuants which irritates intestines and hence creates an urge to defecate.
Secondly he should start things gradually.Ask him to take fiber rich and easily digestible vegetarian BRAT diet for at least a week initially.

Cause of nausea pain etc-
See due to constipation food stagnates in our intestines this stagnated food is acted upon by a large number of harmful bacterias and pathogen which causes production of large amount of gases. These gases accumulate in intestines and compresses the nerves passing through its muscular walls this causes severe pain inflammation and spasm in intestines.
Nausea is our body way to tell us that what you are eating is irritaing me.

Suggestions for a week-
Start taking lactulose 15 ml once daily before going to bed.Its a laxative and would help him get proper bowel moments, very safe and can be used for months.
Drink warm beverages, more so in the morning.
Add vegetables and fruits in his diet.
Drink up to four more glasses full of water in a day.
Have fibrous cereals.
Have a wholesome diet rich in fiber. Good fiber sources are vegetables, legumes, fruits and multi grain bread like XXXXXXX
Eat a well- balanced diet with plenty of fiber. Good sources of fiber are fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole-grain bread and cereal (especially bran).
Drink 1 1/2 to 2 quarts of water and other fluids a day . Fiber and water work together to keep you regular.
Avoid caffeine. It can be dehydrating.
Cut back on milk. Some people may need to avoid it because dairy products may be constipating for them.
Lemon: Lemon contains citric acid, which has the ability to stimulate the function of digestion in your body. The action of lemon on your digestive system enables it to get rid of the toxins and undigested material that generally accumulates on the colon's (the last part of your small intestine) walls, giving rise to constipation as a result. Collect the juice of 1 lemon in a cup by squeezing it. Fill the rest of the cup with warm water. Drink it every morning.
After a week gradually introduce cheat meals in diet and after 2 weeks once his bowel habits are back to normal he can return back to everything he wants to have.

Secondly as per the problem related to urine. It could be an hospital acquired urinary tract infection. Its one of the commonest infection in patients admitted in hospital for a surgery.
A urine microscopy should be done initially and if its positive for bacteria's then short term antibiotic therapy should be taken.

Hope i gave you a simple and easily understandable explaination.

I wish him a great luck and fast recovery.
In case you have any further doubts just revert back to me.

Thanks!
