Posted on Tue, 31 Oct 2017
Question: I want to ask a question if you can tell from photos of a foot if there is a bunion the problem, when painful walking. I understand an x ray would be best, but dont want to pay the cost, and I am told sometimes you can tell just by looking.
I want to send images, of the foot, but do not see where to upload image

Brief Answer:
Yes, but please attach pictures as suggested.

Detailed Answer:
Hi I am Dr Gopal Goel Orthopedic Surgeon.
Yes sometimes it is possible to diagnose bunion by seeing clinically and for this you must upload some pictures of foot from front, top and sides ( both feet together.) You can attach them in this post.
Thanx

If no bunion

what do you think could be the possible causes of sharp pain under the ball of big toe
and what steps would there be to diagnose the cause?

Do you think X-Rays are necessary?

What else?

Answered by Dr. Dr. Gopal (2 hours later)
Brief Answer:
X Ray's are necessary.

Detailed Answer:
hi
Sharp pain under the ball could be due to arthritis of joint,or tendinosis of one tendon or there could be a fracture of small bones in tendons.
would suggest x Ray's pain killers
If x Ray's are normal and there is no relief with medicines then MRI may be required.
Thanx
