What Does My X-ray Report Indicate?
Question: What is significance of hyperaeration on chest xray. Client was told to take a deep breath and hold it for the film. There are no respiratory symptoms and purpose of xray was bc client had shoulder pain on inspiration, but also with movement.

The main essence of a deep inspiration is to obtain a good chest x ray image. Without a good inspiration, it is possible to obtain false positive results. For instance, poor inspiration can easily give an impression of a pneumonia of lower lobes of the lungs even when these lungs are normal. A deep inspiration improves distinguishing clearly the normal from the abnormal and reducing the risk of getting false positive results otherwise called "artefact" results.

Not sure you got my question. I am clear on need for inspiration. I am asking what the significance of the finding of general "hyperaeration" is on the report, given that there are no resp sx and that pt is very thin and was asked to hold a deep breath. Thanks.

A common cause of hyperaeration which of course is not a disease is when patients take an excessive deep breath when asked to inspire when the x ray is taken.
Hyperaeration is mainly associated with two diseases in adults. It is important to exclude asthma and other forms of chronic obstructive Bronchopneumopathies like emphysema or chronic bronchitis. If these diseases are carefully excluded, no need to worry especially since this patient has no symptoms.
