Brief Answer:
vertebral body change

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for your question.

These findings are what might be found on an Xray, MRI or CT of the lower spine. L1 is the first lumbar vertebral body. The endplate is the cartilage covering of the upper or lower surface of the vertebral body. Sclerosis means that there is a thickening or density of the bone next to the endplate, usually due to arthritis or pressure on the bone. An endplate defect is an irregularity in the cartilage surface. In this particular reading what it means is that there is a small defect cartilage covering the lower anterior portion of the first lumbar vertebral body associated with some sclerosis or density in the adjoining bone. This is not a severe finding and could be found on many adult vertebral bodies from arthritis or just some wear over the years.

I hope this is helpful.

Answered by Dr. Kathy Robinson (4 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
probably not related to L1 finding

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

It is not really normal to have pain coming down your legs. There can be many causes for this. If the pain is severe and radiating from your back it could be from disc disease. It could also just be musculoskeletal pain from irritation or muscle strain. Try using some ibuprofen and ice to the lower back. Gentle stretching and massage of the muscles could also be helpful. Often with this kind of pain seeing a chiropractor can be helpful.

I hope you are pain free soon.

Brief Answer:
not cancer

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for this follow up.

No the sclerotic area does not mean cancer at all. It just means you have some wear on your spine. If the CT does not show disc disease then it sounds like you may have sciatica which is an inflammation of the sciatic nerve as it passes from your spinal cord, down through the buttocks and into your leg. Stretches, anti-inflammatory medicines and ice packs to the sore areas may help as well as massage and chiropractic care.

Good luck to you in getting relief of your pain.
