What Does My CT Scan Report Indicate?
Question: On 6/2/17 , I had a CT chest w/contrast. Impression: There is an approximately 2.8 cm in diameter speculated mass present In the right upper lobe worrisome for primary bronchogenic carcinoma. Further evaluation with PET scan is recommended. Biopsymay be necessary for complete evaluation .Thereis a a 4 mm no calcified nodule present in the left lower lobe , too small for characterization with PET scan. Follow-up with CT may be helpful .The examination is otherwise unremarkable.

Just going by this report (without looking at the films), it is hughy suspicious for lung cancer. Because of the size and spiculated borders.
So we need two things, one is the biopsy to arrive at the diagnosis. However suspicious we may become on CT, the confirmation is only on Biopsy. Sometimes, benign tumor can also have this kind of appearance on CT. We also need the PET scan to see the stage, if at all it turns out to be a cancer. Sometimes, if CT scan is doubtful, we do the PET before biopsy, to see if biopsy is required, or not.

I am sorry the typo, it should be 'highly' suspicious. So we should not delay further investigations.
PET scan or positron emission tomography is done by injecting a XXXXXXX called flurodeoxyglucose, which concentrates in tumors, especially in cancer. So helps to differentiate between benign or malignant (cancer) tumor.
