What Does Low FSH Level Indicate?

default
Posted on Fri, 10 Mar 2017
Question: XXXXXXX

I've recently done some blood tests and they seem to have come back with a few abnormalities. My FSH is very, very low, this isn't the first time thats happened either. Also my TSH while in range still seems on the high side to me. I also have a lot of symptoms like decreased libido, hair loss, sweating a lot and my stools seem strange, very dry sometimes or stain/stick to the toilet on other occasions.

Any advice or ideas on whats wrong would be much appreciated please. Thanks so much.

I have linked my blood results below :

Brief Answer:
It can be a pituitary or hypohtalamic problem.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
I read carefully your query and understood your concern.

All your test results are normal except your FSH level and your folate level.

Follicle-stimulating hormone, or FSH, helps regulate the reproductive processes in both men and women. It affects the growth process, puberty maturation and the development of the body.

Low FSH levels in men may mean parts of the brain (the pituitary gland or hypothalamus) do not produce normal amounts of this hormone and can be linked with pituitary and hypothalamic disorders.

Hypogonadism is a common reason for males who show a low FSH level. In this case, insufficient testosterone and LH level,is produced resulting in underdeveloped testicles and lowered sperm count.

You have the symptoms of hypogonadism, but i want to underline that your testosterone level is not low,it is near the lower limit of the normal range, but still normal.Even the LH level is within the normal range.

Most patients with low FSH levels also have low LH and low testosterone levels. A few cases of isolated FSH deficiency exist in which LH and testosterone levels are within reference ranges but the sperm count is low.
Semen analysis is performed to assess fertility.(if you want to know if your fertility is affected, you can do this analisis.)

My advice for you is to do a MRI of the head because the culpit of your condition can be a tumor present in either the pituitary or hypothalamic gland which can be identified with a radiological examination.(Let me know your MRI result.)

Hope this information is helpful for you.
