What Does Enlarged Lateral Ventricles At 20 Weeks In A Foetus Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 26 Jun 2014
Question: Last week I was told that my baby had enlarged lateral ventricles at 20 weeks, measurement was 10.06mm and 10.07 mm. Today, another dr told me that this wasn't really enlarged but the upper end of normal.

Also, they were unable to see CSP on baby....I am terrified...is it possible that baby is actually Ok....she is a twin and her brother looks fine so I have no idea what to do

Any idea on the prognosis?

Brief Answer:
Can be normal.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The upper cutoff of fetal lateral ventricular width is 10 mm. This cutoff represents a range of approximately 3 SDs above the pooled mean which is 6.4 mm within 99.74% confidence interval. A measurement of 10.06 and 10.07 is considered borderline. This can be associated with an entirely normal baby. It can be confirmed on a follow up scan.
No visualization of CSP can be due to baby's position . You should wait for your next scan to find out. Please do not worry. The baby can be normal.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.
Regards.

Do ventricles ever decrease over time?

Baby was Transverse and kind of hanging out under my belly button...maybe that was why she was hard to see?? they also had a hard time seeing her heart....however, I had a sonogram a few days before due to a fall and the heart looked normal.

Can the CSP be hard to see at 20 week sonogram if baby is in bad position?

Brief Answer:
Bad position can cause CSP hard to see.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Decrease in the size of ventricles is not likely but cannot be predicted. It usually is constant throughout the pregnancy. An increase in size is worrisome.
A difficult position of the baby can cause a non visualization of CSP. Repeat scan will help in better evaluation.
Hope my answer is helpful. Further queries are welcome.
Wishing you a trouble free pregnancy.
Take care.
