Posted on Mon, 15 Dec 2014
Question: My wife is at the end of week 38 as expecting date will be completed on 26th Nov and last 2 nights she could not sleep at all, small contractions all night long, mostly in the lower abdomen and waist. Her mucus plug came out today morning and she's been having a yellowish discharge since then. From yesterday evening contractions are 10-15 min apart. We could not understand when to go to hospital or labor room? Are these False labor or what and when should we go to hospital and conclude for the true labor.Need some useful input here as this is my wife's first pregnancy.

Brief Answer:
Wait for pains to increase.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The dislodgement of the mucus plug and presence of regular contractions at every 15 minutes is suggestive of early labor. Such mild contractions can continue for 3-5 days before the actual labor begins.
If she is feeling adequate fetal movements between the contractions and the contractions are irregular then she can wait at home for the contractions to increase. In case the contractions are persistent all throughout the day the intensity of pain is gradually increasing there is discharge of clear watery fluid or the contractions start happening every 5-8 minutes then she needs to go to hospital for delivery.

Thanks a lot for your advice and guideline.
The contractions are happening in every 15-20 min in day hours with no muscus dislodgement and it had increased in yesterday night to 5-10 min with muscus dislodgement in morning. Then Is it a normal phenoman of early labour or what?

Morever if we face the same senario(contractions increarse) in tonight, shall we go to hospital for delivery or should we wait at home for few more time?

Note:As of now fetal movement is fine.

Thanks again.

Brief Answer:
You may need to go to doctor tonight.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The decrease or increase in intensity of contractions is a normal finding. These will gradually start increasing in next few days. Usually the contractions are stronger at night.
In case the contractions become more severe tonight then you can go to your doctor for an internal examination so that she can evaluate about the actual onset of labor.
Hope my answer is helpful.
