What Does Bone Age Of 17 In A 14 Year Old Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 4 Aug 2015
Question: My son is 14 and half years old. He had an X-ray done and his bone age is 17 which confuses me because the growth plates in his wrists are open. I would say he is in stage 4 of puberty. He has a muscular build but that comes from both sides of the families having quite muscular builds. His face is still young looking with only some soft hair on his mustache area. He is 5:2 inches tall. The pediatrician is concerned he is done growing. I'm going to an endocrinologist today. I am a wreck. With that said I can't believe he is done growing at 14 with open growth plates. I am 5:1 and my husband is 5:7 but is the shortest man in his family. The men in my family are 5:5. I'm not expecting my son to be tall but would be so grateful if he was 5:5. Height calculations say he will be 5:6. My daughter is 5:5. He was a large baby and grew normally but started slowing down these past couple of years.

Brief Answer:
He can still grow if growth plate pf legs are open

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case and I can understand your concern. If your son's growth plate of lower legs are not fused then it is good chances then he can increase height. I would suggest you to show it to orthopaedic surgeon. He can suggest you about increase growth potential. You need to increase protein in his diet.

If wrist plates are still open then wouldn't legs still be open. Doesn't the wrist fuse first?

Brief Answer:
Knee physis fuses between 17 to 18

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
it is not possible to predict it on the basis of wrist physis. And it can fuse before or after knee physis. so it is better to assess knee physis.
thanks
