What Does Blood In The Urine Indicate?
Hello Mr. XXXXXXX
Blood in the urine of a man should definitely be evaluated. Things that can cause hematuria in men are anything that can cause inflammation so this includes urinary tract stones, infections in the urinary tract or reproductive system (such as prostatitis), autoimmune inflammatory conditions, vascular abnormalities and strenuous exercise. Less commonly, it can be from a tumor. So it is important to get this checked out.
I recommend you go in to be seen at an urgent care clinic or by your doctor. If there are urgent care clinics open in your area, go in tonight to get the evaluation started. In the urgent care clinic, request to see a doctor (MD) because some of places are staffed mostly by nurse practitioners and physician's assistants, and this should really be evaluated by a physician so that they have the fund of knowledge to be able to think on an extensive differential diagnosis.
In the clinic, the doctor will do an exam and ask you to provide a urine sample there. They can do an initial "dip stick" urine test to look for blood, protein, sugar, and signs for infection. This can be done while you are there. Then the urine can be sent to the lab for a complete urinalysis and if warranted, a culture and sensitivity.
If you are passing a lot of blood however, skip the urgent care and go to the ER. Hospital ERs are best equipped to get answers quickly, and can run a full urinalysis in their lab, and get a "kidneys-ureter-bladder" X-ray or other imaging done right away.
So - don't worry but DO get this evaluated now.
