What Does Bilateral Breast Pain Suggest?

Question: 39 years old and have bilateral breast pain approximately 3 weeks a month. Dermatologist started me on birth control pill about 4 months ago to control cystic acne, and it has not alleviated breast pain, but has helped significantly with acne. Should I follow up with my OBGYN?

Birth control pills cause significant fluid retention in the breast which explains this pain. If the pain is bearable and nothing compared to the benefits of taking this drug (Acne control), there is no need to follow up with your doctor. If the pains are unbearable, then you should follow up. This might lead to the pills being withdrawn or a medication to increase fluid loss/address pain.
