What Does A Throbbing Sensation In Neck And Throat After Pacemaker Implantation Suggest?

Posted on Wed, 26 Aug 2015
Question: I had a pacemaker implanted 3 weeks ago. Last night I began to experience a throbbing sensation in my neck and throat. I worked out with a PT yesterday and did some strength training for my upper body. Can I expect these symptoms to go away by itself?

Brief Answer:
Your symptoms don't seem to be related to the pacemaker

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, your symptoms seem not to be related to the pacemaker. So do not worry about it!

Your complains are probably caused by the straining physical activity, leading to painful muscular contractions.

I would like to explain that with aging our vertebral column becomes more rigid and degenerative changes occur.

These changes can lead to painful contactions of the back and neck muscles from inflammation.

I would recommend avoiding straining physical activity and using painkillers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen for some days.

Professional physiotherapy and myorelaxants (benzodiazepines, cyclobenzaprine, etc) may be helpful.

If your situation doesn't improve in the next days, I recommended consulting with your GP for a careful physical examination, a routine blood test and a cervical spine x ray to establish the cause.

Hope to have been helpful!

Feel free to ask any other questions whenever you need!
