Posted on Thu, 26 Jun 2014
Question: I recently went to the doctor for a swollen node located between my neck and my shoulder I have blood work done and all that came back normal when I went to the ultrasound the ultrasound tech told me that if you saw anything concerning he would call the doctor immediately otherwise he would send me on my way. My Dr office just called me she said I have an abnormal lymph node she said something about a lesion the node in a lesion and that they wanted to do a CT scan. Does this mean that I have cancer

Brief Answer:
its unlikely at your age

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome to HealthcareMagic.

Where exactly is the node present and on which side?

Its unlikely to get cancer at your age. But if the node is on the left side then its a cause of concern. As a node in that area is usually seen in abdominal malignancies.

Nodes can be seen there in case of chest infections, but since all your blood tests are normal, its advisible to get a ct scan done to help detect the cause of it.

Hope i have been helpful.

It is on the left side.
Could it be something other than cancer.
I'm really scared, I have a young son and I'm so worried that this is going to be bad and I won't see him grow up.
Why would they not go straight to a biopsy

Brief Answer:
dont take stress

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

As i said earlier, infection can present also present as a node in that region. Get a CT scan and don't be stressed.

In relation to cancer, usually this node is involved in advanced stages; but again, such an advanced stage at this young age is very very rare. So be positive and go ahead with the scan. Biopsy will be done after the ct scan, specially if that comes out to be negative.
