What Does A Hard And Painless Lump Underneath The Clitoral Hood Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Jun 2014
Question: 3 weeks ago I found a hard, painless lump underneath my clitoral hood ( it's high up on the top but underneath the hood skin) and The size has remained the same. I do have a bit of smegma there which has not caused me any problems ( don't know if it caused some sort of infection of sorts). Should I be concerned, and is there something I can do at home to resolve it? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Nothing worrisome.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The small outgrowth near the clitoris which is painless can be due to many reasons. The most common reasons can be-
1. Folliculitis - due to an infected hair follicle. The painless swelling indicates no active infection in the area.
2. Sebaceous cyst- due to a blocked sebaceous gland. The secretions start collecting inside and becomes large. Needs to be surgically removed if infected.
3. Genital warts- due to a viral infection. Some of the simple tests carried out by your gynaecologist will confirm the diagnosis.
A thorough examination is a must for proper diagnosis and treatment. Since there is no change in size and the swelling is painless no active treatment is needed right now.
You can take general cleanliness measures to avoid any infection in that area.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.

Well in the picture I sent the lump is on the center of my clitoris on the top, not on the side where there is hair. Can this still be the sabaceous cyst you speak of? And no I'm not sexually active. I just want to be certain that they're aren't any other possibilities. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Yes.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The lump in the center is also likely to be a sebaceous cyst. This is nothing serious. You can get it examined by your gynecologist on your next visit.
Hope my answer is helpful.
