What Does A Blue Spot On Shin Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 26 May 2014
Question: I have a spot about the size of a quarter on my upper shin that I thought was a bruise, but it never turned blue. It has been red and swollen for about 5 days, and I have been rubbing it to try to break up and see if that helps. Sometimes it feels itchy. Today I noticed that if I press on it, it leaves an indent. I am not sure what this means, or what to do about it.

Hi

I understand your concern regarding your skin problem and I hope I am able to help you in the same .
Now from the description alone, it is difficult to make out the exact diagnosis . I would like to have a look at the exact skin lesion .
It would be great if you can click some close up pictures of the skin condition and upload them here on this page . You can also mail them at YYYY@YYYY with heading as ref to Dr Geetika Paul.
Also please tell if you have developed any similar lesions in the past?
Any associated pain?
What all are you applying over it?

I am sure I will be able to help you more once you provide me the above details and the pictures .

I have not had anything like this in the past. It feels like a bruise, and I can feel a slight, barely noticeable pain when i walk. Just enough that I notice it. I haven't put anything on it, except when I rubbed coconut oil on as a moisturizer.
One of the pictures is showing my finger indent as I pressed on it.

Brief Answer:
Localised allergic reaction

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

I have seen the attached picture .
The localised lesion that you have is certainly a type of an allergic skin reaction.
Now since you have a single edematous skin lesion, it points more towards a localised cause, something like an insect bite.
But it would be too early to be very sure about the cause.
I would advise you to use a local topical steroid cream like cortisone over the affected areas twice a day . It should clear up in less than a week .
In case the lesion tends to persist even after a week of treatment , then we might need to consider the other rare causes of such a presentation like vasculitis .
But right now, I would say that the lesion surely has an appearance of a localised allergic reaction and it should settle with treatment . Try not to rub the region.
You can continue to use moisturizers over it.
