Posted on Sat, 3 Sep 2016
Question: I had a severe reaction to lidocaine the last time I went to the emergency room, I had all of the symptoms that are listed here. What is in lidocaine?

I also have similar reactions to various other things, with continuing and debilitating symptoms and would like to consult with you more because of this.

Brief Answer:
lidocaine is an anesthetic and anti-arrhythmic

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
Lidocaine is uses in a few ways. It is often what dentists inject when they are doing a filling as an anesthetic so make sure that your dentist knows that you had a reactions to this.
We also use it to inject an area that is going to be cut in the skin or when we are going to need to put in stitches.
It is given to patients intravenously in the hospital setting to correct some rhythm disturbances in the heart.
What kind of reaction did you have and how why were you given lidocaine in the ED?

I injured my back and they were trying to get me to lay down on the mri table and the morphine they gave me did not work so they gave me an injection of lidocaine. It took about an hour to finish up with me and then they sent me home. I was on an iv drip so I do not know exactly when they administered the lidocaine but by the time I arrived home 20min later I was experiencing many very extream symptoms. It started as jitters and dizzyness then moved into full blown uncontrollable shakes combined with a rapid heartbeat and profuse sweating (pouring off my face like water). I then went into dry heaves (I had no food in my system not even water). It felt like my heart was gonna jump out of my chest. The lidocaine did make the pain go away, but the side effects made it not worth it to me. It was very scary but I read the paper they gave me and all the symptoms were listed there so I felt foolish going back in so I did not. It took an hour before I could do anything but sit on the side of my bed with a bucket!
is there epinephrine in lidocaine, my sister had a similar reaction to epinephrine?
I also have many similar reactions when I consume dairy, gluten, msg and almost all N.S.A.I.D.s
My negative reactions to dairy started when I was a child, but the rest of them did not occur intill just a few years ago! There is very little food I can eat now. I am wondering where it will end, will I soon have negative reactions to air, water what? I am scared and frustrated. You can also add head to toe eczema, diarrhea, acne, flue like symptoms (cough, congestion and low grade fever) and deep muscle cramping and pain to the symptoms I listed above. These things occur every time I eat anything but raw fruits and vegetables and then only if they are organic!

Brief Answer:
terrible problem

Detailed Answer:
I am so sorry you are having all these problems.
To answer your question about the epinephrine, some lidocaine comes plain and some does come with epinephrine mixed into it. You need to contact the hospital and find out exactly what type was used so that you know this for the future.
Since there are so many food allergies it would be good for you to see an allergist to help you sort out what exactly you can eat safely. Gluten and dairy are common food intolerances.
I wish you the best,

Thank you for the information about epinephrine. So none of you are an allergist?

Brief Answer:
most are primary care

Detailed Answer:
Most of the doctors on HCM are primary care doctors. However, I do not think an allergist could help you online, they would need to do testing to find out the causes of your allergies and food intolerances.
I hope you get some relief soon
