Question: I had an insurance exam and everything is normal except my CEA level is 9.9. That is way above normal. Should I have additional tests because this might indicate cancer?

Brief Answer: Detailed below. Detailed Answer: Hello! Thank you for the query. This test is not used for colon cancer detection. It is used to monitor treatment in case of diagnosed colon cancer. In simple words, it does not mean you have colon cancer. You may have it, like every other person over the age of 50. That is why, you should have colonoscopy every 10 years starting from 50. If you havent had any colonoscopy, please get scheduled for it. If you have had colonoscopy few years ago, you should also have it done again. If you have your last colonoscopy few months ago, and there was no polyps diagnosed, no need to do it again. If you have previous CEA level (from last year for example) and it was lower that time, it can indicate a cancer. Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions. Regards.
