What Does "Annular Tear With Right Dorsal Lateral Disk Extrusion" Mean?

default
Posted on Wed, 5 Nov 2014
Question: I had an mi 5 months ago for an injury at work. I was hit in the lower back with a heavy machine. My mi impression reads: 1. Annular tear with right dorsal lateral disk extrusion at l4-l5 level. There is a right lateral recess and central spinal canal stenosis with moderate forming stenosis. 2. Annular tear with broad based annular bulging at l4-l5 level. Mild lateral recess and forminal narrowing is seen. 3. Significant facet hypertrophy with severe forminal stenosis bilaterally at l5-s1. I have had 7 epidural injections that have done nothing and want someone to tell me what is exactly going on in my back. Workers compensation doctors don't give you enough information. Please help!

Brief Answer:
Needs surgical treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
According to your MRI report you have severe foraminal stenosis at L5-S1 level. There is mild nerve root compression at other levels also. Epidural steroid injections only reduce the inflammation and give symptomatic relief for a short while only. You need a surgical repair of the discs to improve the nerve root compression and foraminal stenosis.
Do discuss regarding the surgical treatment with your neurosurgeon and get the proper treatment done.
I hope this answers your query.
