Question: F almost 62 Psych disability Dysthymia/Neurasthenia. Prefer to get acupuncture/herbal capsules but since January 2017 my stomach has been vomiting up gel caps. Lately I vomited at McD's and some XXXXXXX veggie samosas made me vomit at 2 a.m. 2 nights ago. Seems my digestion is slowly down, esp of fats. Think I have old duodenal ulcer pain used to come 2 hrs. after eating. I take herbal pills for difficult sleep onset, sinus congestion and heartburn. My stool is formed but sometimes soft. Prior to vomiting onset last 6 months, I get leg cramps at night. I am a bicycle commuter. Do I need to take Ensure? Natural book said take K/Potassium but I don't know what dosage. Thank You, XXXXXXX Finegan

Brief Answer:
History of taking samosa is suggestive if gut infection chronic enteritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query.
Have gone through your details and i appreciate your concerns.

Most likely you are suffering from Gastroenteritis. It is an intestinal infection marked by loose or unformed stools, cramps(due to sodium potassium imbalance), nausea, vomiting r.However its not necessary that all symptoms are there in a single patient.Depending on the cause it can be viral bacterial or protozoal(taking XXXXXXX samosa is suggestive of protozoal infection). Symptoms usually last just a day or two, but occasionally in few patients they can be off and on in nature causing chronic enteritis.

Treatment-

Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration–You need to drink more than usual to replace the fluids lost from vomiting and diarrhoea. Water is best, but you could also try fruit juice and soup.

Get plenty of rest.
If you feel like eating, try small amounts of plain foods, such as soup, rice, pasta and bread.
Use special rehydration drinks made from sachets electral solution to maintain depleted electrolyte levels in serum.
Take anti-vomiting medication (such as zofran 4 mg twice ) and antidiarrhoeal medication (such as loperamide upto 16 mg a day) .
Take 3 days antibiotic and anti protozoal course.
Tab Ofloxacin 200 mg twice a day(9a.m-9 p.m)
Tab Metronidazole 400 mg twice daily(9a.m-9p.m)
no need to take ensure or any other supplement rather take probiotic VSL3 twice daily.
ORS and electral will provide you with sufficient potassium take 6 glasses daily. Once level of sodium and potassium are repleted cramps would go away.
You would need a prescription for antibiotics.

Thanks!
