Brief Answer:
HSV - 1 IgG positive indicates previous infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us.

I am dr.kakkar(dermatologist and venereologist). I have gone through your query and I have noted your concern.

HSV type 1 commonly causes cold sores. Positive IgG for HSV type 1 indicates previous infection with this virus. Though the titre values of IgG against HSV type 1 may vary from lab to lab depending on the kit used but the test would always remain positive throughout life.

Brief Answer:
Regarding HSV type 1

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

HSV - 1 lays dormant in the body inside nerve root ganglion and can multiply from time to time and subsequently progress down the nerve which would then manifest as a recurrence of group of fluid filled blisters in and around mouth/ lips.
Certain precipitating factors like stress, fever, menstural cycle, sun exposure can flare up an epsiode of herpes labialis/ cold sores.
There is no need for any prophylactic medications if these episodes are far and few, they can simply be treated as and when they happen. Two doses of valacyclovir 2gm, 12 hours apart are usually enough to abort or cure an epsiode of herpes labialis.
