Question: My dad has undergone blood sugar test alongwith Folic Acid and Vit B12 diagnostic tests. Lately he has been having pain in his legs on an on and off basis. He is a regular morning walker and walks daily for about 5 kms in the morning.

Following are his results:
Glucose Fasting 117 mg/dL,
Glucose (PP) 151 mg/dL
Folic Acid Serum 8.82 ng/mL
Vita B12 489 pg/mL

Let me know if sugar and other reports are fine and there is nothing to worry.

Brief Answer:
Pre-Diabetes.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,

Thanks for choosing HCM.

After going through your question, I can understand your concern.

Regarding your father's test results -
1) Vitamin B12 and Folic acid levels are normal.
2) Fasting and PP Blood Glucose levels denote Impaired Fasting Glucose (IFG) and Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT) ie. Prediabetes.

I would like to advise regarding your father -
1) Keep following current exercise pattern (Brisk walking).

2) Diet:
- Reduce calorie intake and increase protein intake.
- Avoid sugar intake in any form.
- Increase intake of green leafy vegetables, fruits as a whole (avoid fruit juice).
- Have frequent small meals 4 to 6 times a day, instead of 2 or 3 major meals.
- Adequate intake of pulses, soy bean, egg white (which are good source of protein).
- For better diet advise consult near by dietitian who can plan diet for him considering his height and weight (BMI: Body Mass Index), his food habits.

3) Try to keep weight under control ie. BMI less than 25 (If possible below 23) if this is not possible even with changes in diet and regular exercise try to lose some weight or avoid further weight gain.

4) Following tests are helpful considering his Pre- diabetes status and leg pain :
- OGTT (Oral Glucose Tolerance Test) every 2 to 3 months.
- HbA1c
- Lipid Profile.
- T3, T4, TSH.
- Vitamin D level.
- ECG

5) Regular BP monitoring. Continue Tab Envas as before.

Controlling diet, regular exercise and keeping weight under control can slow or prevent the progression of pre-diabetes to diabetes or even there may be reversal of pre-diabetes to normal.

Hope I have answered your question.
I will be happy to answer your follow up question, if any.
