Not to worry at all; still you have to monitor the PSA level and prostate size periodically and take tamsulosin as usual; thanks!

I just had a prostate MRI done, and it showed an "area of interest". Could that abnormality be something other than cancer ? Im scheduled for a prostate biopsy next week. As stated previously, my PSA level went from 3.7 to 4.8 in just under a year.

Brief answer....there can be various things which can create doubts of cancer and are labelled as area of interest.
Detailed answer....
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
I have read your query and understand your concern.
A moderate rise on PSA doesn't suggest any presence of cancer, however it definitely needs clarification. It is good that MRI has been done and you are proceeding for biopsy as that is the ultimate tool for diagnosis of cancer.
There can be various other problems which can mimic cancer on MRI and hence need clarification.
These problems could be simple inflammatory processes like granulomatous PROSTATITIS and other processes like adenosis, basal cell hyperplasia etc.
There are also other normal gland present ( like cowper's gland ) which can give rise to suspicion.
A proper biopsy will reveal the true picture.
I hope it helps, however you are most welcome to revert to me for any further query.
Best of luck
Thanks
