What Do These CT Scan And Transvaginal Ultrasound Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 5 Aug 2015
Question: I am a 53 year old woman still getting regular periods. I had a CT scan last month which incidentally found "bilateral ovarian cysts, likely functional. The largest is on the right side measuring 2.2 cm."
My gyno sent me for afollow-up pelvic ultrasound and transvaginal ultrasound. The pelvic ultrasound report indicates only "prominent simple cyst, one in each ovary." It says the left ovary contains an anechoic structure measuring 1.4 x 1.3 x 1.2. The transvaginal ultrasound report indicates an anechoic structure with imperceptible wall in the left ovary, but it also indicates "additional anechoic structures, although the more complex appearing structure may be closely adjacent cysts in the left ovary". It states that the overall dimension of this structure was re-measured by the radiologist at 1.9 x 1.8 cm. I am concerned that his impressions indicate "complex septated cyst in the left ovary." My gynecologist has scheduled me for follow-up pelvic and transvaginal ultrasounds in October. Is this sufficient at this point or should I be concerned?

Brief Answer:
These are generally benign findings.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Your findings suggests small simple cyst in right ovary and simple and complex ovarian cysts in left ovary. These are generally benign findings.

Generally these cysts only need watchful observation. It may regress with time.
If size of cyst increases or there is infection, pain etc then it may require further investigations and treatment. These conditions may need treatment for cysts.

You are rightly advised for follow up ultrasound in October.

I don't think it should be a matter of concern.

Get well soon.
Hope I have answered your question.

Thank you for your reply Doctor. So the fact that he classifies one of the cysts as complex and septated should not be a great concern? I have read that complex cysts are more likely to be malignent. Also, is it likely that it could be two simple cysts that are adjacent to each other.?
Thank you.
