Question: Thank you for being available to answer this question. My name is XXXXXXX L. XXXXXXX Los Angeles, CA. First of all, I take Lisinopril 40 mg twice a day, and Nifedipine ER 90 mg tablet once a day in the morning. It has a side effect of swelling in the hands and feet. I have edema and my feet swell greatly daily. I am diabetic and I currently have an open wound on my right leg just above my ankle. It is constantly draining and has been like this for two weeks. My question is: Would it help my feet swelling to change taking Nifedipine ER 90 mg tablets to something else in conjunction with the Lisinopril that I take daily? If so, what would you recommend?

Brief Answer:
Yes Nifedipine needs to be switched with other Anti hypertensive

Detailed Answer:
Hi There

After going through the medical details provided by you of your medical issue I would like to tell you that yes you are right, Nifedipine do causes edema.
As you are a diabetic so Lisinopril is a good drug for you as it belongs to ACE INHIBITOR group which is a recommended class of antihypertensive in diabetic.
Now coming to what can be substituted for Nifedipine, the options are Centrally acting antihypertensive like Clonidine, methyl dopa, other class includes Beta blockers like Metoprolol, carvidelol.
It's advisable to consult with your treating doctor for a written prescription.
Also I would like to suggest to consult a endocrinologist for proper management and control of your diabetes.

I hope I have answered your question. If you have any doubt you can ask me back or else you can close the discussion and kindly rate the answer.

I wish you good health

My heartbeat wakes me up in the mornings starting around 2am. The rate is at least 90 as it is most hours of the day. On occasion my heart rate is 70 and normal. My heart rate increases and pounds when I move in the bed or get up and walk. Happens several nights a week. Doctor put me on Zoloft because he said this was being caused by anxiety. The zoloft works fine for about 2 weeks @ 25mg but just becomes ineffective. I wore a holter monitor and took a stress test. Cardiologist says my heart rate is a little high but otherwise everything else is fine. Put me on metoprolol. Seems to work but makes me short of breath. Had to quit. Blood pressure fluctuates. Sometimes 120/70 sometime 150/90. This is very confusing. Anxiety or something else?
