What Do Red And Itchy Rashes On The Scrotum After Intercourse Suggest?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Feb 2017
Question: I had a sexual encounter with a very questionable partner, but wore a condom. Eleven days later, I developed a red rash on my scrotum. The rash is red and burns/itches. I didn't see any lesions or open sores. There were a couple of small whitehead pimples on my scrotum, but they each had a hair growing out of them. I was so worried it was herpes, I started taking valtrex, (1 gram twice a day) for six days. The rash started to peel. I went to a dermatologist, and was prescribed mometasone. It seemed to just make it worse. The rash spread to my the folds in my inner thigh and butt crack and now my penis is very dry. I've been applying Lamisil for about two weeks, it's seemed to help. Most of the red is gone, but my skin in the affected areas still burns. Last week (6 weeks post encounter), I was tested for STDs and came back negative on everything. What are the chances this is herpes? If it is herpes, how much would the Valtrex have affected my IGG blood test?

Brief Answer:
Does nt seem like a rash of genital herpes

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I am dr.kakkar (dermatologist). I have gone through your query and i have noted your concern.

From your clinical description the rash does'nt seem to be that of genital herpes. It seems more like a fungal or yeast infection. Genital herpes usually presents with painful genital sores. Primary episode is usually very symptomatic with lots of regional pain, burning and inguinal lymph nodes. Taking valtrex would not have affected seroconversion, if it were herpes.
Most likely it was a fungal infection/ candidal intertrigo as it responded to antifungal treatment i.e lamisil.
