What Do Pus Filled Blister On The Palm Indicate?

Posted on Fri, 12 Dec 2014
Question: My husband experienced swelling of his legs and his left hand. I took him to the hospital 2 Sundays ago and after diagnostic testing and labs, he was diagnosed with mild congestive heart failure and diabetes. They never even looked at his hand, which was mainly why we were there. Well now his hand is super swollen, the palm of his hand is dark purple and there is a huge pus filled blister on the palm in the area by his thumb. There are several other blisters forming as well. I am very concerned and he is in constant pain but refuses to go to hospital.

Brief Answer:
Emergency

Detailed Answer:
This is a medical emergency and he must be taken to the ER immediately.

There could be an impeding gangrene in his hand with the matter compounded by the stagnation of blood flow due to congestive heart failure.

I am sorry to note he refuses to go to the hospital. But he is risking his arm and life.
There is a very small chance it may not turn out to be as life or limb-threatening as I have described above but nonetheless it deserves immediate medical attention and treatment to prevent it from progressing rapidly to an advanced stage where it will endanger his life, and salvaging the arm/hand will become difficult.

Of course his diabetes also needs to be very well controlled to assist quick healing.

Did you get the photo I sent? I looked up results for gangreen but it says the infected area is cold. His hand is the exact opposite. It is very warm, almost hot to the touch.

Detailed Answer:
There is no attached photo for review.

There are 2 types of gangrene, dry and wet. The former can be cold especially when circulation to the area is compromised. Wet one is typically infected and hot. Both have ominous consequences if not attended to promptly
