What Do My Lab Test Reports Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 24 Aug 2015
Question: I have been diagnosed with Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D deficiency.
These are the levels observed in March 2015
B12 levels(cyanocobalamin): 176 pg/ml
Hydroxy Vitamin D: 6.1 ng/ml
The doctor has recommended to take B12 shots and Vitamin D capsusles. However, instead of shots I took Jarrows B12 tablets ( 1000 mcg) each day for 100 days along with Jarrows B right B complex tablets ( 100 tablets of Methylcobalamin + Pantethine + P- 5-P.
Vitamin D capsules were for 60k IU taken each week for 8 weeks.
Now I did a retest today and found these results:
B12 level:608 pg/mL
Vitamin D: 32.1 ng/mL
The recommended range for B12 as per the report is 187-883
and for Vitamin D : 30-100
So my question is ,
do I still need to take B12 and B complex tablets each day ( I am a vegetarian and dont drink much milk), I can eat eggs though. So can you recommend a B12 dose with some eggs so that I can meet my requirements. And whether 608 is acceptable now and is there a real need for supplements if I continue eat an egg daily.
And same for Vitamin D, should I continue the Vitamin D dose 60K for 8 more weeks?

Brief Answer:
Continue with vitamin D but no need to take B12 tablets.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

I have read all the findings of your Vitamin D and B12 levels.

Here,608 vitamin B12 level has become completely normal now,so there is no need to take further B12 tablets. You can eat daily 1 egg with 1 glass of milk which would be sufficient for your daily intake of B12 as it is only available in the animal sources of food but no from the vegetarian diet.So no need to worry about B12.

32 vitamin D level is borderline normal,so you can continue vitamin 60 k sachets once in a week for at least 8 weeks to get your vitamin D level come to completely normal.

After that you can recheck your vitamin D level but do remember it is mostly acquired from proper sun exposure. So daily take sunbath for at least half an hour in the morning between 8 am to 9 am.

Hope this will help you.

One last question, Iam taking Eno occasionally for acid reflux, does it have any side effects?

Answered by Dr. Sandip Kabra (16 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
No side effects.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your quick follow-up.

Eno contains three active ingredients sodium bicarbonate, citric acid and anhydrous sodium carbonate which react in a glass of water to produce a formula that neutralises stomach acid.

It is not known to cause any side effects unless you have some known allergy to those ingredients.

Hope this will help you.
