What Do My Blood Test Results Indicate?

Posted on Mon, 1 Aug 2016
Question: Dear Dr. Zografakis,

I liked and appreciated your response. I had a new blood work yesterday in a month and received the results as follows:

TSH 2.73 down from 5.91 (first time outside the normal range) and FT4 1.3 down from 1.4. I am in process of changing my doctor due to his move to another city.

Do you think I am free of thyroidism? Any suggestions?

Thanks,
doctor

Brief Answer:
seems like you're fine!

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

getting normal values after a slightly higher value in TSH measurements is not uncommon! It seems that your thyroid function is not impaired. That's why in cases like yours monitoring is usually advised. I would suggest repeating the tests after 6-12 months or sooner if symptoms develop. If you'd like to do more thorough testing, then testing for antibodies (antiTPO and antiTG) and a thyroid ultrasound scan may provide additional details and perhaps reveal a thyroiditis which is a very common (but harmless most of the times) disorder particularly among women.

Kind Regards!

Dear Dr. Zografakis,

Thank you for your reply. OK. I’ll repeat the test after 6 months.

Is there anything I can or should do meanwhile to help more thorough testing after 6 months do not reveal a thyroiditis?

Thanks,
