Posted on Thu, 10 Mar 2016
Question: Hello, I am attaching my wife's latest blood test as she as concerned about the "High" numbers and the causes. We would like your view about them. In addition her Vitamin D3 is only 37, and I thought it might be low even if above the minimum. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Here is what I think she needs; but overall nothing to worry about

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query and image with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. As only the AST is elevated, and only mildly I do not think it is a cause for concern and is more likely to be due to some medications or natural products she has consumed, so we can rule this out as a cause for concern.

Her total cholesterol is very mildly raised and this need not be treated with medications (e.g. statins), but simply with a better diet and more physical activity (at least 60 minutes of exercise a day).

Her HbA1c is borderline which means her blood sugar has not always been well controlled and will require slightly better control, but again it is borderline so there is really nothing to worry about.

But coming to her vitamin D3, a level like hers will most certainly require correction in the form of shots at least once a week for a while to help meet the normal required range. If this is not done she will suffer from symptoms like pains and aches, weakness, lethargy, palpitations, etc.

I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please do not hesitate to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.

Thank you for that rapid reply! We thought the A1C number was very good. My own A1c is around 6.3.
What would be a likely medication or natural product raising the AST? Would Omega oil help that? On the Vitamin D3 I keep telling my wife to be careful to take her supplement D3 every day. But she isn't consistent!

Brief Answer:
Almost all medications can cause a mild rise in AST levels like your wifes

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again sir.

Yes her HbA1c is good, but not great.

Almost all medications can cause the AST levels to raise because all medications run through the liver causing slight changes in the liver itself and thus in the AST. So, basically going through a good detox diet and drinking a lot of fluids should quite suffice. Omega oil will help only mildly, but it will so you can take it.

With her levels, oral supplements may not suffice and taking into consideration her inconsistent nature we can get her the shots which are once week and we need not even ask her to remember the dates, you can do that and take her along with you to a clinic or hospital to get the shots.

But I am sure you got the gist of it sir, nothing to really worry about. :)

Best wishes.
