default
Posted on Thu, 1 Sep 2016
Question: Our 3 year old son has Low Platelet Count, High Eosinophils and elevated AST.

His First test was 9th April 2016.
The "abnormalities" in his first test are:
AST - 46 IU/L
Platelet Count - 204 K/mm3
Eosinophils - 615/mm3

This test was done to establish a base-line.

He was then stated on two AED (Seizure medications) - Zonisamide and Depakote and the blood test was repeated on 5th August 2016.

His latest readings has following abnormalities:

AST - 51 IU/L
Platelet Count - 166 K/mm3
Eosinophils - 659/mm3

Other results in the CBC are normal.

How concerned should I be? Are these alarmingly bad?

Thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Nothing to worry much about that.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.

Your son has seizures. He is taking zonisamide and depakote.

His AST is slightly elevated which may be due to zonisamide. His platelets count is still normal. Slight fall may be due to depakote.

So don't worry about AST and platelets count. They are almost normal and nothing much is required for that.

His eosinophil count is slightly high. It can be due to some allergy or hypersensitivity. So if his eosinophil count remains high persistently then go for allergy test once. Antihistaminic drugs are useful but consult your doctor and take treatment accordingly.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any doubts then feel free to ask me. I will be happy to answer. Thanks for using health care magic.
Wish you very good health.
