What Do Gas Issues In A Newborn Indicate?

Question: hello doctor,

my son will be 5 months old on 22nd october. He has been having gas issues since he was 3 weeks old. He used to cry inconsolably in the intial days almost daily. We tried gripe water, collicaid but nothing really helped him a lot. I have been exclusively breast feeding him and have been eating light food. Things started improving after i gave up dairy products. I am still not consuming any dairy products but from last 15 days he is super gassy. No change in my diet as such but i have moved to a different city. He keeps on farting like an adult every now and then and is very fussy. He was passing urine almost 15 times a day and pooping around 4 times before. But now he is urinating just 5-6 times in a day and has gained almost negligible (150gms)weight in last 15 days. We assumed that he is probably hungrier now and we started supplementing him with Similac advanced 50 ml thrice a day. But looks like it has made him more gassy..he is unable to sleep properly and wakes up every half an hour passing lots of farts in night. He is even struggling to poop and passing just once a day . Please suggest what could be the issue with our baby ? He was converting into a happy baby but last 15 days have got him back to zero again. I am reallt worried about him.

Brief Answer:
Low lactose formula can help

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. Could you please explain what you mean by super gassy? Do you mean that he is passing a lot of gas? If that is the case, it means that there is undigested food matter left in the gastrointestinal tract. In such a case it would be worthwhile to bring some change in the diet. It can be assumed that the child is not on exclusive breast feeding (had the child been on breast feeding, such problems were unlikely). You may try early weaning with thick liquids like dal water and fruit juice. Try low lactose formula milk (like NAN LoLAC) and that can help. Let me know the feedback and I would guide you accordingly.

Let me know if I could help further.

Regards
