What Do Backache And Tingling Sensations In The Legs Indicate?

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Nov 2017
Question: Hi, I have been suffering from low back pain for 5 months now. I had an MRI done and was told at L4-L5, there is a 3.5mm left paracentral disc bulge causing mild thecal sac indentation. Also, 3mm disc bulge noted L3-L4. Finally, 3mm disc bulge with mild thecal sac indentation and disc desiccation. I have severe pain almost daily. Chiropractor, epidural injections, anti inflammatory, meds, heat pads, walking does not help at all. I am limited to daily tasking. What is the issue??

I forgot to add that I have tingling sensations daily on both legs, but more on my left. Burning sensations sometimes too. I cannot sleep on my left side too because of the pain.

Brief Answer:
Oral muscle relaxants can help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
You are suffering from PIVD at lumbar region. Due to this Disc bulge pressure occurs on nerve roots & radiation of pain and burning occurs in that dermatotome. Physiotherapy like intermittent lumbar traction , back exercise reduces pressure of disc bulge for some time & gives relief.

The following measures will help with the pain
• Lie on a hard bed.
• Anti -inflammatory drugs like Tablet Motrin 1 tablet as and when required ( dont repeat a dose before 6 hours) with food. Do get oral muscle relaxants prescribed by your orthopedic for relief.
Vitamin B12 supplements & Pregabalin may be helpful in controlling the neuropathic pain.
• Avoid forward bending.
• Correct your posture while sitting
• Avoid prolonged sitting
• Avoid strenuous activity & lifting heavy weights.
• Apply diclofenac gel on the affected area. Warm compresses will also help.
After the initial pain has subsided, remedial exercises to strengthen the spine are very important to restore normal spinal movements and muscle strength. The main aim of exercise is to encourage mobility, reduce muscle spasm, prevent further deterioration in the muscles and speed recovery.
I hope this answers your query.
