What Could A Change In Eosinophiles And Monocytes Mean?

default
Posted on Tue, 22 Jul 2014
Question: Hey!

What could a change (doubled in 1,5 months) in my eosinophiles and monocytes mean?

(reference value EOS 0.010-0.060, MONO 0.020-0.100)

27.6.2014 EOS 0.090 MONO 0.112
14.04.2014 EOS 0.043 MONO 0.058
29.08.2013 EOS 0.066 MONO 0.070

I've been getting sick a lot and had all sorts of infections for the past 7 months (not been sick for a month now though). For the past 2,5 months palpapble lymph nodes have been popping up all over (cervical, axillary, supraclavicular, epitrochlear), biggest ones being in the upper jugular area, size ranging from 1,8-2,3cm, in other places size ranges from 5mm-1cm (estimate). Nodes on the neck appeared normal on ultrasound, but since that more nodes have been swelling and gotten palpable in places I've never felt lymph nodes before.

Am I just silly to worry over this or should I try to see a hematologist? Is a rise in eos- and mono-counts along with lymphadonopathy something that should be more thoroughly looked at?

Brief Answer:
Need to get further investigations

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

I understand your concerns.

Overall, I feel that if somebody is having progressively enlarging nodes with new ones appearing, then he or she needs further investigations. Of course, infections may cause enlarged nodes, even viral infections. Usually these do not need any specific treatment, only followup. I see that you have got blood counts done. Though you have not uploaded the full report, the Eo and Mono counts appear quite okay to me. Even though they may be slightly above the upper limit, still not grossly abnormal I would say.

However, coming back to the nodes, I think it will be better to see a hematologist and get this doubt out of your mind. Let him or her feel the nodes, do a thorough examination and determine whether needle aspiration or biopsy will be required. USG is a good screening modality but cannot rule out malignancy.

Overall, I still feel that the risk of malignancy is low but it is better to rule out early than late.

Hope I have answered your query. I will be available to answer further followup queries, if any.

regards
