Brief Answer:
Jaundice

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney. I am sorry to hear about your friend.
It seems he has developed jaundice and most common causes of jaundice causing liver derangement's are Alcohol, Viral hepatitis, Non alcoholic fatty liver disease, Drugs,Obstructive jaundice.
In case he doesn't consume any alcohol, so alcohol induced hepatitis is ruled out.
Your doctor's would investigate him and following tests are recommended:
1. HBsAg for Hepatitis B.
2. Anti HCV Antibody for Hepatitis C.
3. Ultrasound Abdomen.
4. Liver function tests
5. Anti HAV and HEV Antibody.
Treatment would be mostly dextrose containing fluids, lactulose to avoid constipation and to treat bleeding due to coagulopathy if any.
I would be in a better state to discuss the prognosis if you could share his reports with me.
I hope it helps you.
If you have any further query, please ask me.
I wish him a speedy recovery.

What is obstructive jaundice? They do have an IV for him now. They are going to admit him - not sure of any test results right now. I assume all this goes hand and hand w/his lack of energy. I also was wrong on the time line - he was sick last week and he just hasn't been able to shack it. He has had a really bad acidic stomach in the last several 9-10 days.

Brief Answer:
He needs admission.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Obstructive jaundice is due to obstruction of common bile duct by stones.
This requires surgical management.
I just mentioned the common causes of jaundice.
Your doctor will surely teat him as discussed.
You don't worry. Let your doctors do there best and leave the things on God.
I hope he gets well soon.
Good luck.
