What Causes Whitish Stringy Discharge From Wound Site?

default
Posted on Fri, 20 Feb 2015
Question: I'm 60, recently retired. Two days ago, I stood up quickly from the sofa, got dizzy, and managed to fall. My right elbow seemed to take a lot of the impact. There appeared to be a small laceration at the tip of the elbow. I didn't consider it to a major deal. However, later when I was examining my elbow in the mirror, there seemed to be a whitish profusion sticking out of the middle of the wound …. when I pulled on this "thing", I pulled out about 1/2 inch strip of what looked like very stringy meat ….. I was so freaked out (almost vomited) that I refused to look anymore, but I kept thinking about that I needed to figure out a way to "coax" this thing back inside because I couldn't imagine the wound being able to heal with that thing sticking out ….. but the next day when I looked again, it seemed to have somehow retracted on it own and the wound area looks fairly minor. My question is …. What the heck was (is) that thing ??????

Brief Answer:
It is most likely fascia ( covering of muscle) .

Hi,
Thanks for choosing healthcaremagic for posting your query

I'm Dr. Sudhir Kumar,

I have gone through your question in detail and understand your concern.
You got injury to your elbow and got a wound. The whitish thing coming out from wound is likely to be fascia. Fascia is covering of muscles. It was put inside the wound was correct. Now it is healing so it is OK. You can continue will dressing. You can take antibiotics to prevent it from infection. Analgesic such as ibuprofen can be taken for pain relief. Vitamin B and C are helpful for healing.

You can discuss with your treating Doctor about it.

Hope I have answered your query.
