What Causes White Shine From Pupil Of A 1 Year Old During Photography?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Jun 2015
Question: Hello,

I am writing this query about my 1 year old baby. In some of the photographs we click with flash, we noticed that her eyes appear whitish with a white shine. Sometimes they appear yellowish when magnified. We read online that some times they indicate some disease.

This only appears sometimes, not on all photographs. Also, we noticed that pics taken from a Nokia 920 ONLY results in this white patch. But pics taken from XXXXXXX phones are fine. Can this be a camera problem?

Please do suggest if this is something to worry. Are there any signs or symptoms we should watch out for?

If we take her to a eye doctor, what kind of tests can they undertake? Are they safe for a small baby?

Otherwise she appears normal in behavior.

Please help.

Brief Answer:
Indirect ophthalmoscopy is required.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care Magic

I am Dr. Dadapeer K, an ophthalmologist and I will be answering your question.

I reviewed your history and the photos attached with the question.
This white shine from pupil can occur because of camera flash also.
But in children we need to rule out eye conditions as diagnosing them early is very important.
We need to rule out
Squint
Cataract
Retinal tumors
Retinal problems...

Your ophthalmologist will perform simple examination of the eye by torch and do indirect ophthalmoscopy after dilating pupil.
These tests are safe and will not cause any problem.

Hence I advice you not to wait and to consult your ophthalmologist as simple examination will clear all the doubts.

Hope this answers your question and the information is helpful to you.
Do write back to me for further questions.

Thank you
